Freak Out

Created in Unity for Oculus Quest

Project code named “Freak Out”, is a VR rhythm dancing game developed for the Oculus Quest platform. Has a similar gameplay style to Beat Saber, but offers narrative elements and various eras of classic and iconic music. Game was mostly feature complete when I left Seed Interactive, only needing some polish and the final licensed music.

As lead developer, I was responsible for all coding related tasks for the project, from gameplay, powerups, FX, UI, bosses, cutscenes, audio etc. Beyond re-creating the core Beat Saber-like gameplay, I also implemented additional features, such as dance moves (poses the player has to strike) and boss attacks, where various dynamic gameplay and visual effects add a layer of difficulty to hitting the beats (such as having the song fast forward, or player’s view becoming pixelated).

Also developed a “beatmap” creator within the Unity editor. This allows for creatives on the team to easily and intuitively map the beats for the various songs. With a simple click, users can add beat objects to a visualized timeline, then quickly rotate, swap color, edit spin value or simply drag to snap the beat to a new location along the song. Beatmap editor also allows for convenient features, such as copy, paste, creation of presets, auto beat color, fast selection, and bookmarks to easily jump between sections of the timeline.

When evaluating their beatmap, creatives are able to playback the timeline within the editor, showing an audio and visual cue of when each of the beats are to be played, ensuring they line up with the song. Furthermore, beatmap creators can also utilize the Quick Try feature, to instantly test the in-progress beatmap in VR, allowing for quick iterations.
